ASSIGNMENT #1

Online Ad
FONT: Uses a sans-serif font which alternates between bold and italics for effect. Varying font sizes are also used for added effect.

STRUCTURE: A formal structure is used.  The text appears centered and evenly distributed from top to bottom with the main image positioned in the center.
The image is fairly static (balanced).  Both the text and image have been centered and fill the space from left-to-right creating symmetry

The designer uses the contrast of a dark background and a light font in order to draw the users eye to the message.  Even the image of the face, which is light, has been cast in a shadow to help further the contrast of light and dark.  The image of the face is used as the ground of this image where the text in this case serves as the main figure

FONT: Sans-serif in bold.

STRUCTURE:  The text creates one of the main images in this ad.  It seems to have a tight and loose structure, in that the descriptive text is displayed narrowly in order to create the image of the knife, whereas additional information about the show (such as where and when to view) has been displayed in a wider format and set off to the right.
It is balanced heavily towards the bottom and is asymmetrical.

The white space in this ad, which in this case is literally white, helps to highlight the figure of the knife which is being created by the text used to describe the show being advertised.  As the text needs to be condensed in order to create the visual of a knife, groupings are used in order to help certain terms stand out from others.  Different colors and font sizes are used.  The pull of the terms that create the knife draw the eye downward directionally, where then important viewing information for the show has been listed for the observer.

FONT: This ad seems to be comprised of a mixture of fonts.  Both serif and sans-serif fonts are used as well as some display font

STRUCTURE: Seems to have a fairly concrete structure where text is centrally laid out and images fill in empty space on the left and right, creating symmetry.

The designer chose to utilize several different types of font but has grouped these by implementing line breaks and changing color, size, borders, and font type to distinguish between each descriptive grouping of terms. While this technique may be alluring in some cases it tends to be very distracting in this case and not very cohesive.  Also, the positioning of the images to the direct right and left of the text is almost too symmetrical or predictable making this advertisement visually boring.  The use of kitschy images is initially luring but they are lost in the unoriginal overall layout.

FONT: Sans-serif.  While in most of the other ads I observed, all CAPS had been used, while this ad seems to go with a sort of understated/simple use of font.

STRUCTURE: Seems to have a formal structure.  The positioning is perfectly symmetrical and centered.  While this proved to be somewhat boring in the previous ad, I find it very effective in this particular instance.

This ad is a good example of mirroring across a vertical axis.  The same object is shown twice to not only illustrate the product itself but also visually display a service that the product offers (FaceTime). The use of white space and contrast, combined with limited text creates a clean ad that proves visually appealing and in my opinion helps the content stick in the viewers mind.

Print Ad
FONT: Sans-serif font was used.

STRUCTURE: This ad sort of has a motif structure.  The idea or image of the ship in the bottle is repeated several times and then this image is blown up to contain the product being advertised.  It also has a concrete structure as its layout is very grid-like and structured.  The content is fairly centered but is slightly asymmetrical, positioning some of the images and text on alternate sides and positions.

The use of repetition of images sets sets a motif of the ship in a bottle.  The use of a captain furthers this motif.  The designer then uses size (an enlarged image) of this motif to highlight the product.  Text has been positioned in the upper left and lower right of the ad, so as not to distract the viewer from the central image which displays the product.
